Taracea, a family-operated furniture manufacturer in Mexico that specializes in elaborate wooden pieces, released its Gehry collection in April. The line’s parquet chests, coffee tables, nightstands, and beds are handcrafted by local artisans, and the wood, which includes reclaimed oak and alder, is sourced and reused from old houses, old floors, and old furniture.
Furniture designer Javier Suárez, who founded Taracea 30 years ago, purchased more than 740 acres of northern Costa Rica’s forest in 1995 and almost 2,000 acres on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula 13 years later. He uses the timber from already fallen or dying trees for other contemporary designs, and he relies on simple, natural finishes to bring out the beauty of the naturally aged wood. Prices for the Gehry collection range from $1,200 to $5,370.
